All this whining about the MySQL docs..

.. DOWNLOAD IT ALL READY!

Come on! It’s ready for download, so if dev.mysql.com is up, first thing you do? Yes, that’s right: download the manual!

I have my copy incase I’m offline, on a train, or just on a UMTS connection where I have to save on bytes. Searching is a pain, but at least I manage.

Offline! Think Offline! And think that you, at your desk, can be offline as well, alone, with your precious machines. If you are a DBA, and have a clue, download it!

Enough ranting. I’ll probably get bad notes with this post.. but djee.. Now back to my chicken which is cooking in the oven!

Ranting doesn't make your point valid.
The online manual is more sensibly searchable.

In addition, the recent thread of posts and discussion was about the ability to edit/augment the mysql docs, not merely publish or view.

As far as I know bugs.mysql.com is not availible for download and for some of us that is as important as the manual itself.

Hi Geert!

yeah, actually - I do this too. I have on disk copies of all manuals I really need (MySQL, PHP).

If you have a decent .chm viewer, those are actually reasonably searchable.

The online docs are updated multiple times per day, which means any downloaded copy goes out of date quickly.

Regardless, the fact that the docs site went dark for a short period only further illustrates how legal mirroring of the docs is a good idea, not a bad one, and further illustrates how the MySQL doc licensing model is broken.
